UAE residents on an Amazon shopping spree are now liable to pay a new tax on international purchases.

A new customs duty on packages with a value of more than AED300 and shipped internationally came into effect January 1.

It means that parcels bought overseas and shipped to the UAE are subject to further charges.

Dubai Customs Notice No. 5 of 2022 concerns the clearance of consignments through courier companies. It was announced in June of last year and now applies.

Any goods imported with a value of less than AED300 are exempt from paying the fee.

From January 1, 2023, tobacco, tobacco products, e-cigarettes and nicotine liquids of any value are subject to 200 per cent customs and excise tax.
