The March equinox, marking equal day and night lengths and the change of seasons, will occur on Tuesday in the UAE. On March 11, day and night will last exactly 12 hours each, from sunset to sunrise, according to the Emirates Astronomy Society.
This also marks the beginning of the spring season in March, with the days gradually growing longer and warmer in the following days. The autumn season will begin in September, as per the department.
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, discussed the upcoming astronomical events in an interview with the Emirates News Agency (WAM). He highlighted the significance of the equal day and night phenomenon and mentioned two key upcoming events: the total lunar eclipse and the partial solar eclipse.
A total lunar eclipse will occur on the night of March 14, 2025, between 05:09 and 08:48 UTC. The eclipse will coincide with the full moon and be visible across the Americas. However, it will not be visible in the UAE or the Arabian Peninsula.
The eclipse will be a significant event for sky-watchers in the Americas, offering an opportunity to witness the lunar phenomenon in its entirety. The event will occur in the middle of Ramadan, adding an extra layer of interest for those observing the lunar calendar.
Another significant event will be the partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025. This eclipse will coincide with the birth of the new crescent moon for the month of Shawwal, which will occur at 14:58 UAE time on the same day. The partial solar eclipse will be visible in the northeastern part of North America, parts of Europe, and the North Pole. However, it will not be visible in the UAE or the Arabian Peninsula.
