Unless you’ve been keeping your head in the sand, you’ll know the UAE is getting a shiny new railway service, and it’s about to revolutionise travel across the Emirates.
Yep, Etihad Rail is gearing up to launch passenger trains that will zoom between cities faster than you can say “all aboard!” And they’ve just revealed journey times.
First stop? Abu Dhabi. When the passenger trains become operational, you’ll be able to zip from the capital to Dubai in just 57 minutes. Gone will be the days of lengthy drives on the highway or Abu Dhabi to Dubai by bus – you might even pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read.
Fancy a weekend in Fujairah? No problem. You can glide your way there in just 1 hour and 45 minutes. And if you need to dash over to Al Ruwais, you’re looking at a mere 1 hour and 10 minutes.
The Etihad Rail passenger service will connect 11 cities and regions across the UAE, from Al Sila to Fujairah, with key stops in places like Al Mirfa, Sharjah and Al Dhaid.
If you’re already planning your next getaway, expect commutes between these Emirates to be slashed by up to 40 percent compared to other modes of transport. A seamless journey with a fraction of the stress? Sign us up.
Now, in typical UAE style, this project isn’t just about making travel easier; it’s about making it greener too.
Etihad Rail is playing a massive role in helping the UAE reach its Net Zero by 2050 Strategy, with carbon emissions in its crosshairs. They’ve teamed up with Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, to power up the freight terminal in Ghuweifat with a brand-new solar plant.
It’ll generate up to 85 per cent of the terminal’s electricity, cutting CO2 emissions by more than 8,500 tonnes annually. Just think about all those clean, green miles you’ll be travelling.
You might be thinking, “This sounds fast, but what about comfort?” Well, the sleek passenger trains, designed by Spain’s CAF, will offer all the modern amenities you could want.
Picture this: 400 seats spread across first class, business class and economy, with plenty of legroom, charging stations and infotainment systems to keep you entertained. Need a snack? There’ll be food and beverages on hand too, ensuring you travel in style.
Etihad Rail has partnered with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), which means Dubai’s nol card might soon be your key to hopping on board. The sleek new ticketing and payment system will make it easier than ever to plan your journey, pay your fare, and get on the move. It’s all part of the UAE’s master plan to connect people, places, and industries, in style.
