Abu Dhabi could be taking its next big infrastructure project underground.
And, it could all come from a new agreement signed with Elon Musk’s The Boring Company. The agreement is set to explore underground transport and utility tunnels across the Abu Dhabi emirate.
The agreement, which was announced on Thursday October 8, is a partnership between the Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre (ADPIC) partner and Musk’s US-based company.
Together, they’re set to investigate how advanced tunnelling technology could improve connectivity, support future growth and make better use of space in the capital.
The agreement was signed at the Liveability and Investment Exhibition (LIVEX 2026) bringing together officials from the emirate and representatives from the company founded by the tech billionaire.
The partnership will explore potential underground transport systems, utility tunnels and other infrastructure solutions. The two organisations will also assess how projects could be built, operated and maintained, alongside looking at safety standards, automation and digital engineering. If you’ve experienced one of the world’s big cities that runs on underground transport, you’ll know how life-changing this could be.
In other words, this is about more than getting from A to B. Underground tunnels could also provide space for essential utilities, helping Abu Dhabi accommodate its growing population and ambitious development plans.
But before you start planning your commute through a futuristic network of tunnels, remember: nothing has been agreed or announced thus far, and the partnership is in an exploratory phase.
