Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Monday approved the first license for self-driving vehicles.
The license was given to WeRide company, granting them the opportunity to test self-driving vehicles on UAE roads.
“Today, in the Council of Ministers, we approved the national policy for electric vehicles, which includes building a national network for electric vehicle chargers, regulating the electric vehicle market, and stimulating related industries to ensure reduced emissions, energy consumption, and the preservation of the quality of roads that the UAE enjoys. We also approved today, within the Council of Ministers, the first national license for self-driving vehicles on the country’s roads, which was granted to the specialised WeRide company,” Sheikh Mohammed said via Twitter.
WeRide, an autonomous driving company, has its headquarters situated in Guangzhou, China, and has established centers in various cities, including Abu Dhabi.
With a global presence, the company is actively engaged in autonomous driving research and operations across more than 26 cities worldwide.
The UAE also established a new Ministry of Investment, with Mohammed Hasan Al Suwaidi being appointed as the Minister of Investment, as part of the establishment of a new ministry.
The objective of this ministry is to enhance the Emirates’ investment vision, foster a favorable investment climate, and strengthen legislation to maintain the UAE’s position as a prominent global investment hub and active participant in international investment activities.
Additionally, the Vice President has given his approval for a revised national energy strategy, aimed at adapting to the fast-paced transformations occurring in the energy sector.
