For many of us, e-scooters are a speedy and affordable mode of transport for whizzing around Dubai. And though highly effective, e-scooters have safety risks for riders and those walking on foot.

There are several requirements for e-scooters to pass before being approved by the RTA. These specifications include headlights, rear lights, a horn on the steering wheel, a reflector on the front and rear of the scooter, the fitting of front and rear brakes, with an in-built speed limit of 20 km per hour.

After this announcement, e-scooter providers will need to make sure that no scooters are parked outside of the approved zones. They must also ensure that each e-scooter has the correct identifying labels and logos.

The RTA also said that the electric scooters in use need to be redistributed to prevent the parking of e-scooters on the pavements.

“The awareness campaigns and inspection of RTA-appointed e-scooter operators in Dubai have significantly contributed to the delivery of safe, smooth and enjoyable services to users from all spectrums of the community,” said Muhannad Al Muhairi, director of licensing activities monitoring, licensing agency.
