Abu Dhabi has another interesting rule you’ll want to pay attention to – and this one comes with a Dhs10,000 price tag.
The Civil Defence has confirmed that anyone misusing staircases in buildings could now face a hefty fine. Why? Because those staircases aren’t just for decoration – they’re vital escape routes in case of fire or other emergencies.
Blocking them, using them for storage, or repurposing them in ways that compromise safety can put lives at risk and the new rule is here to make sure they’re always kept clear.
The fine is set out under Cabinet Resolution No. 24 of 2012, which regulates civil defense services across the UAE. It applies to all buildings and facilities, with one exception – private standalone homes are not included.
Officials stressed that the measure is about more than just penalties: it’s part of Abu Dhabi’s wider commitment to raising safety standards and minimising risks across the emirate.
So the bottom line? Keep those staircases clear. Because aside from the financial sting of Dhs10,000, the rule is ultimately about ensuring that when emergencies happen, people have a safe, unobstructed way out.
